What causes morning grogginess after waking up at 5:30 am?

I've been trying to get up at 5:30 AM for a month now to get a head start on my day, but my main issue is that I just feel groggy and unproductive for the first hour. I sit with my coffee and my planner, but my brain feels completely foggy. I'm not sure if this early rise time is actually counterproductive for me, or if I'm missing a crucial step in my wake-up process that others have figured out.

I did the 5:30 thing for a month too. The first hour felt like brain fog no matter what. I kept coffee by the planner and tried a tiny morning ritual: splash of cold water, a minute of stretching, and a window with light. Sometimes it helped, sometimes not.

Maybe the real blocker isn't the alarm but sleep quality. I kept track of bedtime and woke times, and when I slept less than seven hours in a row the mornings stayed rough. If you’re always tired, pushing wake time later might be better.

I did notice timing of caffeine mattered. If I drank coffee immediately upon waking I felt jittery; waiting 15 to 20 minutes made the first hour clearer.

I keep wondering if the early start is even the problem. A few days I swapped the 5:30 wake for 6:15 and kept a gentle 30 minute routine; the overall day felt the same but I wasn't forcing myself to fight the fog.
