What could be causing worsening bloating with a functional gut disorder?
#1
I’ve been dealing with what my doctor calls a functional gut disorder for a few years, but lately the bloating and unpredictable cramping have gotten a lot worse. I’m starting to wonder if there’s something more specific going on, or if this is just how it’s always going to be.

Yeah, I get the fatigue of it. After years with a functional gut disorder, the bloating can spike suddenly. I tried cutting out dairy and then gluten, but the relief was never permanent. For me, poor sleep and stress seem to crank things up more than any single food.

I chased a bunch of tests, hoping for a clean diagnosis. Breath tests for SIBO, allergy panels, you name it. Nothing decisive ever stuck, the label stayed. I also tried gut-directed meditation and a few weeks of stricter diet, and felt a little calmer, but the symptoms weren’t tamed.

Do you think the problem is the gut itself or more of a signal from stress or hormones?

I started a simple symptom log: note what I eat, the time, sleep, workouts, and when cramps hit. Over two weeks I saw patterns—carbs late in the day tended to correlate with bloating, some high-stress days did too. It didn’t fix anything, but it gave me something concrete to talk through with my doctor and a rough idea of what to try next.
