What could cause a 3-year-old's leg pain at night in the front of the thighs?

My three-year-old has been complaining that her legs hurt at night for the past two weeks, and it’s happening almost every evening. It’s always after she’s been active during the day, and she points to the front of her thighs. We’ve ruled out any obvious injury, but the way she wakes up crying is really worrying us.

I went through something like this with my kid last year. We ruled out injury and ended up chalking it up to growing pains or just tired leg muscles from a busy day. A warm bath, a gentle leg stretch before bed, and a quick thigh massage helped a bit. She still woke crying a few nights, but the episodes faded after a couple of weeks. It was scary to hear her cry.

For a couple weeks I kept a simple log: what she did that day, when she woke up, how long the pain lasted, and whether anything looked swollen or red. It didn’t solve it, but it gave us something concrete to discuss with the pediatrician and helped us not panic every time.

The front of the thighs sounds odd to me, so I worried maybe she strained something or overused those muscles after running or climbing. We tried to ease activity a bit on rough days and offered extra rest, but then she’d wake up again. I still don’t know if that was the right move.

Do you notice any fever, swelling, or a limp when she wakes, or is it really just crying and waking up? If you see red flags like fever or a persistent limp, you’d want to check with a pediatrician soon.
