What could cause a dark spot in the center of my vision in my right eye?

I’ve been noticing a persistent dark spot in the center of my vision in my right eye, like a smudge that won’t go away. It’s especially obvious when I look at a plain wall or the sky, and it’s starting to make reading difficult.

I hear you. I once had a small dark spot show up in the center of my vision too. It didn’t go away, and I hoped it would, which wasn’t smart. The center spot can be a sign of something in the macula or even a retinal issue, so it’s not something to ignore. Make an appointment with an eye doctor soon, and tell them it’s in the central vision. If you notice flashes, a new curtain across the vision, or any sudden vision loss, get to urgent care or the ER immediately.

Trying to wait it out, I tried covering the eye, adjusting lighting, and reading with one eye. Nothing fixed it. I booked a routine eye exam but the earliest slot was weeks away, which was stressing me out. Eventually I got a referral to a retina specialist and they did some scans. The spot didn’t disappear, but they explained it could be a number of things and that’s why I wanted the full check.

I keep wondering if the spot is the real issue or a symptom of something else like eye strain. It could be nothing, or it could be something that needs a real exam. Do you notice it moving when you move your eyes?

One of my friends said maybe it’s just floaters, but center-focused issues aren’t typical floaters. I tried lowering screen brightness and taking breaks; glare bothered me less but the spot stayed. I guess the takeaway is to book that eye check and not ignore it, even if it’s annoying.
