What could cause a dark spot in the center of my vision in my right eye?

I’ve been noticing a persistent dark spot in the center of my vision in my right eye, almost like a smudge that won’t go away. It’s especially obvious when I look at a plain wall or the sky, and it makes reading text directly in front of me really difficult.

That sounds worrying. I’ve had something similar and it felt like a spot that wouldn’t go away. I didn’t ignore it, and it pushed me to get checked.

If this is in one eye and persistent, book an exam soon, ideally with a retina specialist. In my case they did an OCT scan and some back-of-eye checks, which helped rule out a lot.

Could this be the real problem, or is it something else like glare or eye strain?

I tried to just ignore it for a few days and see if it changed with lighting, but it stayed. Then I started keeping a rough log of when it showed up and what I was doing, which for me didn’t solve it but at least I had notes for the doc.
