What could cause a groaning power steering noise in my Civic at low speeds?

My 2016 Civic has started making a strange groaning noise from the front end, but only when I'm turning the steering wheel at low speeds, like when I'm parking. It's not a constant sound, just a brief moan as the wheel moves. The power steering fluid level looks okay, but I'm worried it could be the pump or maybe a steering rack issue beginning.

I’ve had something similar on a different car. The noise was brief and only when turning at low speeds. On the Civic there isn’t a power steering fluid to check because it uses electric power steering, so the issue isn’t a leaky pump. It could be the EPS motor or a sensor acting up. If it keeps happening, a quick scan for EPS codes would be my move.

One time I found it was a torn tie rod boot and some grease smeared on the knuckle. Replacing the boot quieted things for a while. If you’re seeing grease or torn rubber, that’s a cheap, easy check. Also feel for play in the tie rods or wobble in the wheel when the car is up.

Sometimes it’s something simpler—like a tire rubbing or a loose brake pad. I once blamed the steering rack but it turned out to be a bumped lip on the fender liner rubbing the tire. Hard to tell without looking around.

Have you noticed any warning lights on the dash?
