What could cause a high-pitched brake whine at gentle stops?

I’ve been noticing a faint, high-pitched whine from my car’s brakes whenever I come to a gentle stop. It’s not the usual grinding or squeal, and the pads still have plenty of material left, so I’m a bit puzzled about what’s causing it.

That faint high pitch sounds like something in the brake system acting up rather than a hard metal grind. I’ve had it happen when a wear indicator or anti rattle clips were making noise, or when the rotor got a little glaze. It wasn’t urgent, but it did creep me out.

Glaze on the rotor from a few light stops can make a high pitched hum even when the pads still look thick. It’s not always the pads wearing out fast, just a rough surface. A check and a quick deglazing or a longer brake run usually helps, but I’m not sure that’s what you’re dealing with.

I chased a similar sound for weeks and then found it was something else entirely—an empty sound caused by a loose wheel bolt rattling near the caliper. It would come through in the stop, but it wasn’t the pads at all. It made me rethink noises I hear in the moment.

Does it happen only at very slow speeds, or when the brakes are warm too?
