What could cause a new oil leak after an oil change on my Civic?

I just changed the oil in my 2012 Civic and now I’m seeing a few drops of fresh oil on the garage floor directly under the filter. I torqued it by hand until it was snug, then gave it another quarter turn like I always do, but maybe that wasn’t enough this time. I’m wondering if the old gasket from the last filter could have stuck to the engine block.

I’ve seen that happen. Old gasket can stick to the block and you end up with a leak even after you think it’s snug. I’d pull the filter, clean the mounting surface really well, check for leftover gasket, then install a new filter and tighten to spec. The snug plus a quarter turn rule isn’t universal and depends on the filter.

This happened to me once. I found a tiny strip of gasket left on the engine and after scraping it clean and using a new filter, the drip disappeared.

Sometimes it isn’t the gasket at all but a slightly cross threaded filter or a bad base seal. If the surface is scratched, it will seep slowly.

If you want, tell me what filter model you used and whether you installed a new gasket with it or used a filter that has a built in gasket.
