What could cause a ticking engine noise in my Civic—valve train issues likely?

My 2016 Civic’s engine has started making a persistent ticking noise that speeds up with the RPMs. I just changed the oil last month and the level is fine, so I’m a bit worried it could be something like a valve train issue or a failing hydraulic tensioner.

I had a ticking noise on a Civic once after a cold start. Oil level was fine, and it turned out to be a loose exhaust heat shield vibrating near the exhaust pipe. It would speed up a bit with RPMs but it wasn’t coming from the valve train. A quick check under the car and a single bolt snugged it up and the sound went away.

If it were the valve train the sound would usually be louder when cold and might change as the oil warms. For me it persisted even after the oil change, which pushed me to consider other culprits before tearing into the top end. A hydraulic tensioner failure would be loud but those aren’t common on every engine.

I actually tried using a long screwdriver against the valve cover and listening through the handle. The click seemed to come from the exhaust side more than the timing area, which again pointed me toward a leak rather than a lifter.

Did you notice if the noise changes with load, or if it only shows up when you rev in neutral?
