What could cause grinding noise when turning at low speed in my Focus?

My 2016 Focus has started making a loud grinding noise from the front end, but only when I’m turning the steering wheel at low speeds, like in a parking lot. It’s fine going straight, so I’m wondering if it’s the power steering rack or something in the steering column itself.

Had something similar on a 2016 Focus. The sound only when turning at slow speed felt more like something in the suspension or steering linkage rubbing than a pump issue. People pointed to the rack, but in my case it was a worn inner tie rod and a slightly worn wheel bearing. The electric assist in these cars isn't hydraulic, so a grinding from a pump wasn't it.

With these electric setups the column motor can groan or grind when it's failing. If it's the column, you’ll hear it even when the car is still and you just turn the wheel a bit. I didn’t trust that diagnosis, but it’s worth asking a shop about.

Would you say the noise changes when the tires are cold versus warmed up?

I remember a neighbor with a similar sound after a curb and it turned into a sticky steering column bushing. Not conclusive, but a reminder front end parts wear differently. Still driving cautiously while awaiting a check.
