What counts as a home office deduction for desk and chair?
#1
I’m trying to figure out if I can deduct the cost of my home office desk and chair this year, since I’m now fully remote. My employer doesn’t reimburse for furniture, but I’m not sure if this qualifies as a business expense or if it’s just considered a personal purchase since it’s in my house.

Most fully remote employees treat that desk and chair as a personal purchase. The unreimbursed employee expense deduction was suspended for 2018 through 2025, so you generally can’t claim a home office furniture write off on your federal return unless you’re in a rare category.

If you’re actually self employed or have a side business, you can deduct the business use of the desk and chair. You’d need a space used regularly and exclusively for business, and you can depreciate or deduct under the right rules. Keep receipts and a record of what portion is for work.

I tried this when I freelanced. bought a desk for about 350 and wrote that roughly 60 percent was for business use. The gain wasn’t huge, and the paperwork felt heavier than the benefit.

I keep wondering if the bigger issue is whether you have a dedicated workspace or just a corner. If it’s not exclusive, you might not qualify even for a home office deduction. It’s frustrating either way.
