What difference does a higher mouse polling rate make in games?

I’m trying to decide if I should upgrade my mouse to one with a higher polling rate, but I’m not sure if I’ll actually feel a difference in-game. My current one is 1000Hz, and I’m looking at a model that goes up to 8000Hz, but I keep wondering if it’s just a number on the box or if the improved responsiveness is something my setup can even take advantage of.

I swapped from 1000 Hz to 8000 Hz last year on a 144 Hz panel. I didn’t suddenly snap to targets faster, but the cursor felt a touch more immediate when I flicked hard. The real gain for me was consistency in aim drills; in actual matches the difference was small.

I keep thinking it might be masking other lag sources. If the computer’s input chain already adds a few milliseconds, the extra drop from 1000 Hz to 8000 Hz can get swallowed. I didn’t see a dramatic change in ranked games on my rig.

I did a quick test by flipping the setting and running a few practice rounds. It felt like a tiny edge, but not reliable enough to trust in a real match. After a week I stayed with a middle setting because the payoff wasn’t there for me.

Sometimes I wonder if the bottleneck isn’t the mouse at all. The monitor refresh, VSync, and network ping can all blur the picture. If you’re curious, try a weekend experiment and set a clear threshold for what would count as a win before you switch back.
