What do you think about starting New Game Plus in Chrono Trigger?

I just got a copy of Chrono Trigger for my SNES, but I’m honestly a bit intimidated by the idea of a New Game Plus. I’ve never played a game that had that feature before, and I’m worried it might cheapen the experience of finally beating it for the first time. Does starting over with all your end-game stuff right away make the story feel less meaningful?

I played Chrono Trigger on SNES years ago, beat it, and then tried a second run with end‑game gear in hand. It felt like a different journey, not cheapened. The first pass had the awe of discovery; the second showed a few hooks you can miss and let you see how the story threads link together. It reminded me that endings aren’t just one moment but a pattern you notice more clearly later.

On another game I did something similar, and the early dungeons got easier with a fresh save, which was nice but a little odd. I kept the pace slow and let my brain soak the dialog again, which helped a bit, but it didn’t ruin the memory of the first win.

To be honest I’m not sure if Chrono Trigger even has a formal New Game Plus on the SNES; a lot of people talk about it with later versions or modded copies. If you’re worried about meaning, treat a second run as a separate ride rather than a shortcut.

Is the real issue that you’re afraid nothing will feel surprising on a second run?
