What does a dark spot in the center of my vision mean?

I’ve been noticing a persistent dark spot in the center of my vision in my right eye, like a smudge that won’t go away. It’s especially obvious when I look at a plain wall or the sky, and it makes reading text directly really difficult.

That sounds scary. A dark spot in the center that sticks around isnt something you should ignore. It could be something in the macula or a retina issue, or even a nerve related changethe only way to know is with a professional eye exam. Try to book with an optometrist or ophthalmologist in the next couple of days. If you suddenly see flashes, a curtain crossing your vision, or you lose part of your sight, go to urgent care or the ER.

I had something similar once after long days staring at screens. I booked an appointment and, while the quick check didnt show an obvious emergency, they did more tests and told me to monitor changes. It was a relief to hear it wasnt immediately dangerous, though I still dont have a clear answer.

Could be a central scotoma or a macular issue, but Im not confident about guessing. Id rather not talk myself into a later panic, so Id just say: see someone who can look at the back of the eye.

Is the spot there all the time or only when you look at bright surfaces?
