What does a ferritin level of 12 mean for my iron stores?
#1
I just got my blood work back and my doctor said my ferritin level is at 12 ng/mL. I’m trying to understand what that really means for my iron stores, since the lab’s reference range starts at 15. I feel tired all the time, but I don’t know if that’s directly from this or just life.

That ferritin number, 12, is below the lower end of many labs. If the range starts at 15, a lot clinicians would call that low iron stores or iron deficiency until proven otherwise. Fatigue is a common sign, but it's not proof by itself. In my experience, some people notice a small lift in energy after addressing it, but it can take weeks and not everyone feels better quickly.

I hear you. Fatigue shows up in lots of ways and it can be hard to tell what’s driving it. This could be from iron, sure, but it could also be sleep, stress, dehydration, or other things you’re dealing with day to day.

I tried to fix it with diet alone for a while, and I kept waiting for the energy to return. It didn’t really shift until I talked to the doctor about a plan and got a second round of tests. Worth noting that changes can be slow, and not everyone responds the same way.

Some people end up with a plan that includes a simple follow up test and a discussion about whether a supplement is right. A lot of folks also look at other iron measures and medical history to rule out other causes.

Do you have heavy periods or GI symptoms, or is sleep and stress your current main suspects? If you want, I can help you think through what to ask your doctor.
