What does a supermajority mean in our zoning vote?
#1
I’m trying to understand how my local town council’s recent vote on the new zoning ordinance actually works. The meeting minutes show the final tally, but I can’t figure out why a simple majority wasn’t enough for it to pass—some folks mentioned a supermajority requirement buried in our municipal code.

I read the minutes too and it felt like there was a hidden rule beyond a simple majority. Some abstentions showed up and the outcome stayed unclear to me.

I asked the town clerk and they mentioned that for zoning a two thirds vote is required. That means more yes votes are needed than usual.

From a legal angle the phrase supermajority changes how the numbers flow and it makes broad support necessary for a plan like this.

Maybe the real issue is not the mechanics but how the plan was pitched to residents and what the cost would be in practice. Do you think the problem is the text or the way it was explained?
