What does ferritin of 8 ng/mL mean if hemoglobin is normal?
#1
I just got my blood work back and my doctor said my ferritin level is at 8 ng/mL. I’m feeling exhausted all the time, but I’m confused because my hemoglobin and red blood cell counts are still in the normal range on the report. Has anyone else had a similar situation where their stored iron was this low before their anemia showed up in the other numbers?

I went through something similar a few years ago. ferritin was 8 ng/mL and I felt wiped out even though the CBC stayed normal. Doctors explained that iron stores run out first and it can take weeks or months before you see a change in the red cells. I started with iron‑rich foods and a doctor‑approved supplement for a couple of months, and energy slowly came back as the stores replenished. It wasn’t instant, but the fatigue eased a bit over time.

That happened to me too. My CBC stayed in the normal range for a while, but the fatigue and fog were there weeks earlier, and it only felt better after the iron stores started to replenish.

I tried an oral iron supplement for about two months. Didn’t feel a big jump in energy, and I got a bit constipated, so we paused and checked again. The doctor said the stores were low, but it didn’t fix things fast for me.

Did your clinician mention inflammation or an infection could skew what the test shows?
