What does filaggrin deficiency mean for my eczema day-to-day?
#1
I’ve been dealing with a stubborn patch of eczema on my hands for months, and my dermatologist just mentioned it might be related to a filaggrin deficiency. I’m trying to understand what that actually means for my skin day-to-day, beyond just the constant dryness and cracking. Has anyone else had this specific connection explained to them by their doctor?

I hear you. That patch has stuck around for months for me too. I started keeping a thick ointment at work and applying it after every wash, then slipping on a soft cotton glove at night. It helped a bit, but the patch still shows up after a long day or when the skin dries out again.

My dermatologist mentioned filaggrin deficiency as a factor. It means the skin barrier doesn't hold onto moisture well, so irritants and wet hands can seep in more easily. No wonder it doesn't behave like regular dry skin, and it helps explain why creams help temporarily but the problem keeps coming back.

Has anyone else noticed if certain soaps or gloves make it worse?

I still end up doing dishes with bare hands sometimes and then pay for it later. When I remember to moisturize in the morning and again after work, the flare seems calmer for a day or two, but then it pops back. It feels like a moving target.
