What does skin tightness from a retinoid mean: normal or barrier damage?
#1
I’ve been using a topical retinoid for about three months now to treat my persistent acne, and while the breakouts have improved, my skin feels incredibly tight and looks almost shiny in a strange, papery way. It’s not the typical flaking I expected, but more like the texture has become thin and fragile. I’m wondering if this is a normal part of the retinization process or if I’ve damaged my skin barrier.

I’ve been using a retinoid for a few months too. The acne got better, but my skin started feeling tight and it looks almost papery and thin, not the usual dry flakes. I slowed way down to every other night and layered on a rich, fragrance-free ceramide moisturizer after washing. It helped a bit, but the texture still feels precarious some days, like the barrier is easily irritated.

I did a brief trial where I paused using it for a week and the tightness eased, then I went back and it came back. Now I’m focusing on a gentle cleanser and a heavy, ceramide-rich moisturizer, but I’m not sure if it’s helping or just masking the issue.

Maybe it’s not barrier damage at all but the weather or a new skincare layer interacting oddly. I keep guessing and nothing feels settled.

Do you think the real issue is this treatment, or could something else in your routine be the culprit?
