What does the final shot mean for the protagonist's arc, death or peace?

I just finished watching the movie and I’m still stuck on the very last shot of the protagonist walking into the light. Was that meant to be him literally dying and going to the afterlife, or was it a more symbolic representation of him finally finding peace? I can’t decide which reading makes more sense for his character arc.

I watched the last scene and I am not sure if he died or simply found room inside his own head for calmness. It lands both ways depending on the moment you pause it.

Do you think the last light is a doorway or just a symbol that he finally forgave himself?

The edge of the screen fades like a long fade out on a road trip after a rough day and in that mood the ending feels like relief rather than a hard close to the story.

I lean toward a symbolic stillness a moment of inner peace after a tough path the film never trains you to expect a grim ending and I am not sure it resolves anything.
