What essentials should i pack for a two-week city and hiking trip?

I’m trying to pack for a two-week trip that includes city sightseeing and a few days of hiking, but I keep overpacking. How do you decide what’s truly essential for a mixed itinerary like this without ending up with a massive suitcase?

I used to overpack, then I started a capsule approach. For a two week mix of city days and trails I pick two sturdy bottoms (one convertible hiking pant, one lightweight casual pant), three breathable tops, one long-sleeve layer, a light fleece, and a compact rain shell. I carry underwear and socks for a week and do laundry mid trip. Footwear is one sturdy hiking shoe plus one lightweight pair of sneakers or sandals for evenings, and I wear the heavier pair on the plane. A small daypack, a refillable bottle, sunscreen, a tiny first aid kit, and a micro towel ride with me. I roll clothes, use packing cubes, and keep the bag flexible by avoiding bulky items. If it starts to feel heavy, I drop one top or swap pants for something lighter.

I made a pared down list and then forced myself to cut half of it. The key was laundry: if you can wash every few days, you don't need extra outfits. So I bring a few outfits, a compact detergent packet, and I rotate.

One trip I weighed my bag after packing and it came to 18 kilos with a full hiking kit. I cut it to about 12 by leaving the second jacket, choosing a lighter shell, and skipping an extra hiking pant. I also wore the bulkiest item on the plane to save space. Felt much better.

Do you think the real issue is the plan for city days versus hiking days, or that you fear you won't have something you might need?
