What hand position improves chest activation in push-ups?

I’ve been doing a standard push-up for months, but I can’t seem to get my chest to fully engage; my shoulders and triceps take over every time. I’m wondering if my hand placement or scapular movement is off during the concentric phase.

I went through something similar a while back. I started watching how my shoulder blades moved and kept my hands roughly shoulder-width apart. I tried thinking about engaging the chest as I started the press instead of driving everything with the arms, and I paid attention to not shrug at the top. It helped a bit, but I still had to remind myself to stay loose in the neck and upper traps.

I tried a couple of cues and still felt the shoulders doing most of the work. I told myself to keep the core tight and the elbows tucked, but then I’d slip into tricep-first mode. The sensation flipped if I went deeper than about mid-range.

Sometimes I wonder if the real limiter is mobility or scapular control. If the chest can’t clear the ribs evenly, the shoulders take over to compensate. It made me realize a tiny range change or a different angle could shift who’s doing the work, even when my hands feel in the same spot.

Action I actually tried was to prop my hands on a box to shorten the range, then progress with flat feet and a braced core. I logged tempo and counted reps, and the chest felt more involved when I paused at the bottom and pressed through midrange. Do you feel this change when you test with a slight height difference and a brief pause at midrange?
