What happened to the character's motivation in that fight scene?

I just finished watching the latest episode and I'm honestly stuck on that moment where the main character chose to walk away from the fight. It felt completely out of step with everything we've seen from them since the training arc, like their core drive just vanished. I can't tell if this is terrible writing or if I'm missing some subtle character shift that happened earlier.

I felt the same. After all that training, it looked like they threw away their core impulse. Maybe fear and fatigue finally won out, or they’re protecting someone else in a way we haven’t been shown.

Maybe the writers are showing growth by taking a path that isn’t about winning fights. It could be a move toward consequences, or choosing a bigger plan over a punch. I’m not confident that’s it.

Could the real issue be pacing or editing? The beat lands oddly if there’s a longer setup that never shows through in the cut. Maybe the intention was clear but the cut undermined it?

I rewatched the scene and compared it to the earlier prompts from the training montage. The line about staying true to the oath didn’t click the same way this time. It’s like they tested a hypothesis and the results didn’t show up.
