What helped you tell black-throated blue warbler from black-throated green?

I’ve been trying to get better at identifying warblers by their songs, but I keep mixing up the black-throated blue warbler with the black-throated green. Their songs sound so similar to my ear, just a buzzy series of notes. Has anyone else struggled with this specific pair, and what finally helped you tell them apart?

Yeah, I chased that pair for weeks. I started paying attention to where I heard them more than the buzz. That warbler sounded sharper and a little faster to me, while the other stayed steadier with longer notes.

I started recording a minute after dawn when the light was just right, then played back and compared to guide recordings. I also noted whether the bird perched high in a maple or lower in the understory.

I even tried a quick micro‑analysis once: slowed a clip to half speed and looked at a spectrogram. It helped me see that one had a denser, higher pitched burst early on, while the other drifted in with a more even tremolo.

Have you tried noting the quiet gaps between phrases? If not, maybe slow down a few clips and just listen for rhythm instead of trying to lock onto a single sound.
