What is a fair price for a used Honda Civic EX?

I’m trying to figure out what a fair price is for a used 2018 Honda Civic EX I found locally. The dealer’s asking price seems high compared to some listings I see online, but I’m not sure if those cheaper ones have hidden issues or different histories.

I looked at a 2018 Civic EX with about 40k miles last year. The dealership tag felt steep next to private listings, but the cheaper ads worried me because of spotty histories. I spent a weekend calling sellers, pulling receipts, and comparing tires and service dates. It helped, but I still wasn't sure what a fair number would be.

I did one concrete step: asked the dealer for maintenance receipts and pulled a Carfax. One private listing showed two owners and an older accident report; another dealer had clean history but mileage wasn’t as low as advertised. Those details changed how I talked to them, even if I didn’t buy.

I keep wondering if the cheap listings are mostly fine or if there’s something big hiding. Sometimes it seems like a coupon for a long grind—new tires here, a small service there, and suddenly the deal looks better until you realize the brakes were marginal. I walked away from a couple because the condition and history didn’t match the photos.

Maybe the real issue isn't the sticker but how these cars stack up on history and maintenance. Do you think the real problem is the value versus the risk of hidden issues?
