What is keeping my HP printer from finishing a wireless setup on my laptop?

I’ve been trying to get my old HP printer to work wirelessly with my new laptop, but the setup keeps failing halfway through. The software seems to recognize the printer, but it just won’t complete the final connection step over the network. I’m not sure if it’s a driver issue, something with my router settings, or if the printer itself just isn’t fully compatible.

I've chased that pattern before. the printer would show up in the list but the last connection step would stall. rebooting the router, the laptop, even the printer a few times helped temporarily, but it always came back to the same hang.

I kept chasing it years ago with an old HP and a new laptop. I checked the network name, tried a different WiFi band, and even turned off AP isolation on the router. The printer could see the network and pull an IP, but the final handshake just wouldn’t complete. It felt like the last mile was missing somewhere in the cloud between printer and PC.

Could the issue be the printer's software version or compatibility with your OS? Sometimes it feels like the network is fine and the wizard stalls because the driver or firmware isn't playing along.

One time I gave up and used a cable instead. The printer sat close to the laptop and things worked, but obviously that's not what you want for a wireless setup. It makes you wonder whether the real problem is the mess of layers between old hardware and new laptops.
