What is the best way to decide on renewing a monthly transit pass?

I’m trying to figure out if I should renew my monthly transit pass this time. My office just switched to a permanent hybrid schedule, so I’ll only be commuting downtown three days a week, but the occasional weekend trip might still make the pass worthwhile compared to paying individual fares.

I kept a monthly pass before and it still felt worth it on the days I did go downtown. Now with a three day week, I’d say the math matters a lot: if you’re using it on at least a couple of weekend trips and a few downtown runs, it tends to pencil out. If your weeks end up lighter, the pass starts feeling wasteful.

I tried ditching it and going pay-per-ride for a full month. It was cheaper on paper, but I ended up paying more in little extra fares and I didn’t track trips well. It felt messier and I slipped up on weekend plans.

Maybe the problem isn’t the pass at all. Maybe the bigger issue is the variability in hours you’re willing to work or how predictable your weekend trips are. Could you reorganize a bit to trim costs without changing how you work?

Not sure yet. I kept it this month and ended up breaking even, roughly. If the next month looks sparse, I’ll drop it; if I end up commuting downtown a bunch or planning weekend trips, I’ll keep it. It feels like a coin flip.
