What is the best way to renegotiate a service contract without confrontation?

I’m trying to get a better deal on a long-term service contract, and I’ve hit a wall where the other side just keeps repeating their standard terms without engaging. I’m wondering if I’ve somehow signaled that I’m not willing to walk away, even though I am. How do you subtly reset that dynamic without making it a confrontation?

Been there. I backed off for a day after they kept looping the same terms, told them I’d review and get back with a number. It changed the vibe. Suddenly they asked what exactly I cared about, and I could point to one line I needed changed instead of the whole package. I think showing you have a limit helps more than shouting it.

One time I brought in a competing quote with a deadline, not a threat. They pushed back, but I held steady and asked for a concrete SLA and a cap on price for the first year. It got them to offer a middle ground rather than their boilerplate. It wasn’t perfect, but it moved.

Maybe the real issue is not their contract but the way I framed it. I kept saying we should sign if X and they heard it as you’re attached. I started asking for a short pilot period instead of committing long term, and that made it easier for me to walk away if it didn’t fit.

I keep wondering if I’m barking up the wrong tree; maybe the problem is the product or service itself, not the terms. I tried a quick change: I asked for a written summary of what was included and what wasn’t, and I still felt stuck. It may be about moving to another vendor, but I haven’t pulled the trigger yet.
