What is the proper chopstick etiquette for a formal dinner?
#1
I’ve been invited to a formal dinner in Kyoto, and I’m worried about using chopsticks correctly because I know there are specific taboos. For example, I’ve heard you should never pass food directly from your chopsticks to someone else’s.

I’ve done a formal dinner in Kyoto and the big one is not to pass food directly from one person’s chopsticks to another’s; that feels off and the host will notice.

Another thing I learned was to rest the sticks on the holder when not in use and keep them off the edge of the plate; it signals calm and not rush.

I did try a bite passed around once and it drew a look from a waiter, so I stopped and let everyone take from their own plate after that.

Is the real problem maybe just reading the room and letting the host guide the flow rather than memorizing every rule?
