What is the recovery timeline after rotator cuff tear surgery?
#1
I’ve been dealing with a nagging pain in my shoulder for months now, and my doctor mentioned the possibility of a rotator cuff tear after an MRI. I’m trying to understand what the recovery process is actually like if surgery ends up being the recommendation. The idea of being in a sling for weeks and then months of physical therapy feels a bit daunting, and I’m wondering how others managed their daily tasks during that initial period.

That sling life is real I was in one for several weeks and the first days feel like a bad dream every small task felt risky I had a pillow under the elbow and kind of learned where to position it to avoid pulling on the shoulder I found small help from a family member made a huge difference

When I had surgery I kept a list of tiny goals for PT and daily moves like reaching for a cup and brushing teeth with the other hand it helped to track progress I also planned meals so I did not need to reach into hot pans or carry heavy stuff for a while My progress was slow but the pain eased little by little after the first two weeks

I am not sure I would say this is how it should go I tried to push through thinking more therapy equals faster return but that did not work I kept stopping and starting and felt tired a lot I still wonder if a different approach would have helped sooner

Could the real issue be how you move your shoulder day to day rather than the tear itself maybe a posture or neck problem is involved I would want to hear what your surgeon thinks before planning too much but it makes me pause
