What made the Oscars audience look so unfamiliar to me lately?

I just watched the Oscars and realized I don't recognize half the people in the audience shots anymore. I used to be able to name most of the actors and directors in those front rows, but now I'm just seeing a sea of unfamiliar faces from streaming shows I haven't gotten to.

I felt that too. I used to recognize a lot of the people up front, directors and actors you would see at every awards season. Now it is a sea of faces from streaming shows I have not watched yet. It makes you realize the Oscars mix cinema stars with streaming fame. After last year I started checking the credits and looking names up online, and I realized I knew a handful of showrunners but not the actors in those rows.

I tried to keep it casual but kept glancing at the screen to spot someone I know. I gave up after a few minutes and opened IMDb on my phone to match faces to names. It felt like a scavenger hunt but more fun than frustration.

Do you think the real issue is that the recognizable pool has shifted because streaming stars are less visible in traditional press or is it just our memory failing to keep up?

Sometimes I drift to thinking about gowns and seating charts like the front row is less about who they are and more about who the networks want you to notice. Then I snap back to the point the names blur and I am not sure if that is a failure of memory or a sign of how the industry has changed.
