What makes tank controls in resident evil feel like a design choice or relic?
#1
I just tried to replay the original Resident Evil on my PS1 and I honestly can't tell if the tank controls are a brilliant design choice for building tension or just a frustrating relic. I remember being terrified as a kid, but now I keep getting turned around and eaten because moving feels so deliberately awkward.

Those tank controls felt deliberate not accidental They kept you on edge every corridor You had to plan every turn and the camera never helped You were scared as a kid and now you get turned around and eaten mostly from confusion more than fear

I tried playing with the D pad only on a CRT I mapped routes stayed in mind and kept sessions short I still got picked off in the same long corridor but I felt I understood the layout a bit better

One night I drifted off comparing with a modern game and the pace was different the fear was still there but not the same heat It made me wonder if the problem is memory of danger rather than the actual control

Do you think nostalgia is warping how you read the game or is the issue truly the mechanics?
