What makes The Muppet Show humor feel different to kids today?
#1
I just tried to show my kids the original "The Muppet Show" and they were completely baffled by the guest stars. They had no idea who Buddy Rich or John Cleese were, and the whole variety format just seemed weird to them. It made me wonder if that specific kind of humor and pacing is something you had to grow up with to really get.

Tried showing the old clips to my kids last weekend. Buddy Rich came on and they looked at me like I was speaking a foreign language. I realized the energy back then was part of the joke, not just the guests.

My kid asked who John Cleese was and I paused, then remembered I was that kid once. The pacing felt punchier to us then; today it seems like a lot of talking and waiting for the laugh.

We tried skipping to the punchlines and letting the puppets do the heavy lifting, but it still felt strange. I guess the humor was tied to a studio vibe and a crowd.

Is the issue that the show was designed for a live audience and not for streaming attention spans, or is it that the humor just felt different back then?

I remember watching with a friend who knew every guest, and we would trade notes after each segment. Without that context the jokes felt loose.

We kept it short and went back to the puppets, which is probably the safer move; the guests are fun but not the point for kids.
