What modern jazz albums finally clicked for you?

I’ve been trying to get into more modern jazz, but I keep hitting a wall where everything just sounds like background music to me. I put on a highly recommended album from a contemporary artist, and my mind just wanders—I don’t feel the engagement I do with, say, a classic Blue Note record. Has anyone else struggled with this, and found a particular album or artist that finally clicked for you?

I’ve been there. Modern jazz just sounded like background noise until I slowed down the listening and focused on one element per track.

Kamasi Washington's The Epic finally pulled me in after a few weeks of trying different tracks. It’s big, but the momentum helped me ride along.

I tried pairing a contemporary artist with a Blue Note record I love, listening for how the vibe shifts—suddenly I heard a dialogue between players.

Maybe it’s the setup—the room, the headphones, the compression—switching those changes how it lands.

Rather than chasing a single album, I kept a running playlist and noted what actually grabbed me: a drum fill, a piano line, a melancholy horn.

I started with shorter tracks under five minutes and kept a notebook; the compact length made it easier to stay engaged.

Maybe the real problem isn’t the music at all, but my expectations and the idea of what modern jazz should feel like across the board.
