What note-taking app actually handles a messy, mixed-media workflow?

I’ve bounced between a bunch of note taking apps and always hit the same wall. The tool handles text and media fine, but it quietly nudges me toward organizing before I’m ready, which breaks my flow.

I use a markdown style note app on and off. It works well for mixed media with text and embedded images, and being able to jump quickly between notes helps when ideas pile up fast.

For a while I stopped trying to find a single perfect app and used a loose combo instead. One quick capture app plus a shared folder for PDFs and screenshots felt messy, but it let me keep moving.

I keep wondering if the friction is really the app or just how much stuff I try to capture at once. Any tool feels heavy when everything comes in unfiltered.

Lately I’ve been dumping rough notes into one long text file and keeping media in a separate folder. It’s not elegant, but it’s fast and doesn’t lock me into a specific system.

I tried one of the popular knowledge management tools for a sprint. I abandoned perfect links and structure pretty quickly and went back to something simpler that didn’t slow me down.

What seems to help me most is delaying structure. I collect first in whatever form is fastest, then clean things up later if the project survives long enough.

I still haven’t found a single app that feels invisible. Every tool seems to trade flexibility for order, and I’m not sure that trade is avoidable.
