What plants thrive in shade under a maple tree?
#1
I’ve just moved into a house with a large, mature maple tree that’s casting a deep, thick shade over what’s supposed to be my backyard garden. I’m struggling to figure out what, if anything, will actually grow well in that area without needing to cut back the tree.

Under that maple I learned to lean into shade. Hostas grew big, ferns filled gaps, and hellebores kept blooming through winter. I added compost and leaf mold, mulched to keep the roots cool, and tried not to stomp on the shallow roots. Water during dry spells helped, but mostly it stayed green without much work once I stopped trying to squeeze sun-loving plants into it.

I planted a mix of hosta, ferns, and bleeding hearts and let them fill in. The bed stayed alive most of the year, though the deepest shade spots stayed sparse. Leaves fed the soil, and I learned to keep mulch light enough to let roots breathe.

Do you think the real problem is the tree roots and soil quality, not just shade?

Moss carpeted a damp corner for me, and I found it easier than fighting for flowers there. It needs steady moisture, but it stays green even when other stuff falters. If you can keep it from drying out in hot spells, it looks kind of peaceful.
