What's the most overrated movie soundtrack of all time?

I'm trying to settle a debate with my friend about the most overrated movie soundtrack of all time. I keep thinking of that iconic 80s synth-pop album everyone seems to love from a certain high school detention film, but I'm starting to wonder if my dislike is just me being a contrarian.

I used to hate that soundtrack in the detention movie. The synths felt glossy and loud, like they were selling a mood instead of telling a story. I gave the full album another listen last year to try to settle the debate and it just felt dated and a little hollow to me, not the genius some people swear by.

I get why some people swear by it. That late 80s glow, the way the tracks punch up memory of standing in the hallway after class, it hits. For me it still works in the car, but overrated? I don’t think so—the vibe is undeniable even if you’re not sold on the music as a masterpiece.

I keep thinking maybe the problem isn't the songs at all but the movie itself. If the film lands differently, the score feels essential; if it doesn’t, the whole thing falls apart. I tried isolating the melodies and they still reminded me of gym lockers and cafeteria chatter. Is the problem the music or the film itself?

Sometimes I drifted to a different soundtrack entirely, like chasing a mood instead of a verdict. I’ll admit I once bought into the hype for a road trip, but by the second chorus I was checking my phone and wondering what I’m even judging here.
