What settings help freeze a bird in flight without losing detail?

I’ve been trying to get a clean shot of a bird in flight, but even with a fast shutter speed, the wings are just a blur. I’m not sure if I should be panning with the subject differently or if my autofocus settings are working against me for this kind of motion.

I get it. I chased a fast falcon last month and even at 1/2000 the wings stayed blurry. I tried panning and keeping the bird in the frame, but the motion won out. Maybe the light was too bright for the huge ISO swing, or I was simply chasing the air too much.

AF was the real trouble for me. I switched to continuous AF and used a single point, but the camera kept hunting and the eye wouldn’t stay pin sharp. It felt like the focus was guessing the plane and the wingbeat always won.

I started to doubt the gear more than technique. I played with different lenses and focal lengths, and the blur looked different each time. One day I thought the wind was the culprit; another day I blamed the body’s processing. In the end I wasn’t sure what helped.

Do you think we should shoot a touch earlier than the wingbeat to avoid tearing the motion, or is the real limiter the lens and tracking?
