What should I check first for a P0420 code in my car?
#1
My 2016 Civic’s check engine light came on yesterday, and the code reader says it’s a P0420 for catalyst efficiency below threshold. The car seems to run completely fine, no odd smells or loss of power, which has me confused about what to check first. I’m wondering if it could just be a faulty oxygen sensor giving a false reading, or if the catalytic converter is actually starting to fail.

I had the P0420 show up on my Civic and it ran fine no noticeable changes in power or smells.

A lot of folks told me it could be the oxygen sensor or the catalytic converter and I leaned toward the sensor since those fail easy and you can swap one and keep driving.

Could a tiny vacuum leak set that code I am not sure?

I have not changed anything yet and I am still driving it and watching for any rough idle or gas smell which would tell me more
