What should I consider when choosing between 1440p and 4K for gaming?

I’m trying to decide between a 1440p and a 4K monitor for my new setup, and I’m stuck on whether the higher resolution is actually worth the performance hit. My GPU can handle 4K in most games, but I’m worried about future titles and if I’ll really notice the pixel density difference during actual gameplay versus just on paper.

I swapped to 4K last year. The image is incredibly crisp—text, menus, the HUD—it's noticeable in everyday use. But in demanding titles I had to drop settings or enable DLSS to keep frame rates up. For me the extra clarity matters most outside games; in fast shooters the performance hit felt real, so I kept 1440p for those.

I kept 1440p at a high refresh and everything feels smoother. The density is nice, but in motion I didn’t feel a huge difference until you’re close to the panel. 4K would be great for content work, but for pure gaming FPS headroom wins for me.

If you sit close to the screen, the jump to 4K is bigger; if you sit farther back, 1440p looks plenty sharp. Do you sit close to the panel?

I tried 4K for a week with a midrange GPU and the 4K60 experience wasn’t fun; I dropped back to 1440p and kept a higher refresh, which felt more responsive. It wasn’t a dramatic revelation, just a real tradeoff.
