What should I do about a persistent dark spot in my left eye?
#1
I’ve been noticing a persistent dark spot in the center of my vision in my left eye for about a week now, and it doesn’t go away when I blink. It’s like a small, fixed smudge that makes reading text directly ahead difficult. I’m worried this could be a sign of a macular issue, but I’m not sure if this is something that warrants an urgent visit or if it’s a less serious floater.

That sounds scary. A week with a fixed dark spot in the center isn’t something that usually goes away on its own. I’d treat that as a sign to get checked, especially since it affects reading.

I’ve had floaters and a few minor disturbances, and blinking didn’t fix them either. But a central spot that sticks around could mean something in the retina or macula; better to have it looked at.

I’m not a clinician, but in my family we’ve learned to take new central vision changes seriously. We’ve done urgent eye visits for similar things and been glad for it, even if nothing critical was found.

If you can, try to see an eye doctor within the next day or two. Bring notes about how long it’s been there, whether it changes with eye movement, and any other symptoms like flashes of light.

Keep an eye out for red flags: sudden vision loss, light flashes, a shadow crossing your field, or a lot more new floaters. If any show up, go to urgent care or ER.

I had something similar years ago and it turned out to be nothing urgent after a full exam, but it was hard to tell from memory. The exam helped.

Would you mind if I asked a quick question: do you see it only in your left eye or with both eyes, and does it move when you move your head or eyes?
