What should I do about high blood pressure if I feel fine?
#1
I’ve been told my blood pressure is a bit high at my last two check-ups, but I feel completely fine. My doctor mentioned starting medication, but I’m hesitant because I don’t have any symptoms and I’m worried about side effects. Has anyone else been in this situation where you felt okay but were facing the decision to begin treatment for hypertension?

I was in the same boat not too long ago. two checks in a row hovering above the usual mark, but I felt completely fine day to day. my doctor talked about meds, which felt scary since I don’t feel sick. I ended up trying a purely observational approach for a few weeks—home readings every morning, keeping stress and caffeine in check, and walking more. I learned my numbers bounced around a lot depending on time of day and how I slept. Still, they hovered a bit high, so we discussed starting a low dose to give things a chance to settle. Not dramatic at all, and the idea of side effects worried me more than the numbers. I decided to give it a try with close follow up, and we recheck in a month. It’s still not a clean victory, but I’m not sprinting to the pharmacy either.

Personally I did go ahead with meds after two readings, even though I felt fine. The first week or two I noticed mild tiredness, nothing crazy, and after that it leveled out. Numbers looked better on days I exercised and cut back on salty snacks, but I still had to remind myself to take it every day. It didn’t feel like a relief right away, more like just noticing the clock ticking, you know.

Do you think the real issue is the readings themselves or how the tests were done?

Another thing that helped me was borrowing a home monitor and pricing out the time of day. I found mornings were more volatile, and an evening check sometimes looked better after a workout. It made me doubt the sense of urgency and helped me talk more honestly with my clinician about whether meds could be delayed a bit while I changed habits.
