What should I do if my car insurance is canceled after a lapse?
#1
I just got a notice that my car insurance is being cancelled because of a lapse in my prior coverage, but I’m certain I never missed a payment on my old policy. Has anyone else had this happen when switching companies? I’m worried this mistake will make it much harder and more expensive to get a new policy now.

I switched carriers last year and got a notice about a lapse that wasn't true. A week later I found a processing error the old insurer credited a payment late or the transfer wasn't filed. It took two calls and a screenshot to clear it.

I'm not sure what's worse the lapse or the fear it caused. I kept paying on time but the new company flagged the old policy as lapsed anyway.

Maybe the real problem isn't you missing a payment but the system mixing up policy numbers or the name on the account in the backend of the carrier's database hard to tell with this insurance stuff.

One thing I did for peace of mind was pull a playback of bank statements for the two months around the switch and compare the dates.
