What should I do if my insurance cancels after a hail claim?

I just got a notice that my insurer is canceling my policy due to a recent comprehensive claim for hail damage. I thought that type of claim wasn't supposed to count against you, but now I'm worried about finding new coverage and what this means for my rates.

I hear you. I just got the same kind of notice after a hail claim and the policy says it’s canceled. I thought comprehensive claims weren’t supposed to count, but I’m worried about finding new insurance and what the rates will do.

I’m not sure the claim is the whole story. Some markets are pulling back after weather years, but I called my agent to ask for the exact reason and I reread the cancellation notice. Did you see if the notice listed a rate change or just a nonrenewal?

I started calling around to a few carriers and two regional ones too. One quote came back about 30 percent higher and a couple were similar but with higher deductibles. I also checked into a state plan option, but it looked slow and expensive.

Maybe the bigger thing isn’t the hail claim but the pool of people willing to insure homes around you. Or maybe the policy you had isn’t offered much anymore. I keep wondering if this is a sign to rethink whether a different deductible or carrier makes sense, but I’m not sure that fixes it.
