What should I know before moving into a first-time manager role?
#1
I’ve been offered a promotion that would move me from an individual contributor role into my first people management position. I’m confident in my technical skills, but I’m genuinely unsure if I have the right temperament to coach and develop a team effectively. Has anyone else made this jump and felt unprepared for the leadership responsibilities?

I took a similar jump and felt unprepared too. I started weekly one on one chats with each teammate and I kept notes on what they asked for and what they delivered. After a few months I learned listening mattered more than giving orders.

The first six weeks were rough and I tried to fix every problem myself ending up burned out. I paused and asked for help from a mentor which helped me see bigger patterns.

Maybe the real issue is not me but the team needs or the work setup do we have clear goals?

I did try a small experiment like letting a teammate own a mini project while I only watched for a while. It felt slow and awkward but after a few iterations the team started to guide themselves more and I learned to ask better questions.
