What should i look for beyond the consensus claim in this layer-1 investment?

I’m trying to evaluate a potential investment in a new layer-1, and their whitepaper keeps emphasizing their novel consensus mechanism as the main source of value accrual. I’m just not sure I buy that the token’s price will be driven primarily by that technical feature, especially with so many chains competing on similar grounds.
