What should I look for in a plastic-free body wash that lathers well?

I’ve been trying to switch to a zero-waste bathroom, but I’m really stuck on finding a good replacement for my liquid body wash that comes in plastic bottles. I tried a few bar soaps, but they either leave my skin feeling tight or don’t lather well, and I’m not sure what to look for in a truly sustainable option that actually works.

I swapped to body wash bars with extra oils as part of a zero-waste switch. When shopping, I look for bars that list glycerin or added oils (cocoa butter, almond oil) and avoid those that foam a lot but strip moisture. I rub the bar between wet hands to build a creamy lather, then massage it on damp skin and set the bar to dry on a fabric soap bag. The lather isn’t as big as liquid, but it’s enough and my skin isn’t getting tight anymore.

One bar I liked started out drying, so I switched to using a washcloth or loofah with the bar. It helped loosen the bar's slip and made the lather feel smoother. Still not perfect, but living with it.

I tried a refillable bottle with a gentle base and added a drop of oil after shower. I tracked it by how long the bottle lasts and how my skin felt 4 hours later. It improved, but the extra oil means a little more product use and a mess in the bottle every few days.

Are you sure the issue isn’t the water or your skin type rather than the packaging?
