What top looks best with wide-leg trousers for my frame?

I finally bought a pair of those wide-leg trousers everyone’s wearing, but I’m struggling to make them look right on my frame. I tried a fitted top like the guides say, but it just feels off, like I’m playing dress-up.

I actually picked up a similar pair last month. I tried a thin knit tucked in, a narrow belt, and standing with a hand on my hip. The line looked better, but when I sat down it felt off and kind of bulky in the wrong spots.

I wore them with a chunky sweater and sneakers once, then with a silky blouse and loafers another time. Both ways the leg opening swallowed my frame a bit, so I started wondering if I should size up or down.

Could the real problem be where the waist sits on you? I kept fighting the fit and started thinking maybe the issue isn’t the top at all.
