Where can I find a true crime podcast with thorough, respectful research?

I’ve been trying to find a good true crime podcast that doesn’t just rehash the same famous cases everyone already knows. I want something that feels like a deep, respectful investigation, not just sensational storytelling. I heard one recommended that was supposed to have a really thorough approach to its research, but I can’t remember the name now.

If you want a true crime podcast that digs deep and stays respectful, check out In the Dark. The reporting is thorough, season by season, and it often looks at how investigations actually unfold rather than just retelling crimes.

I’ve chased that same vibe and landed on Criminal a few times. It isn’t chasing sensational twists, more like a curator of small, odd details that show the bigger picture.

That recommended one you heard could have been In the Dark, but memory plays tricks. There are other shows that avoid the big-name cases and do longer interviews with investigators and prosecutors.

I started listening to something that felt like archival digging and halfway through I wondered if the problem was the pacing more than the case itself. Does that vibe exist for you, episodes that feel like real investigative work rather than a story?
