I’m trying to find a good local mechanic, but I’m worried about getting overcharged or receiving shoddy work. Has anyone had a really positive experience with an honest auto shop in the west side neighborhoods? I just need basic maintenance done, but I don’t know who to trust.

I live on the west side and found a small family shop that felt honest. They gave me an itemized estimate before any work and showed me the old parts. They explained what needed doing and asked for my go ahead before touching the car. The bill came in close to the estimate and they were clear about any extra costs.

My sister had a different experience. They quoted a high price and tried to push extra work. I asked for a second opinion and another shop explained the same issues for less money.

I tried a mid range place because it was convenient and they did decent work but I left unsure about the long term reliability. They did not call me first when a thing came up and that felt off.

Sometimes I wonder if the problem is the shop or my own expectations. Have you tried asking friends for specific examples of good service and price transparency?
